SARASOTA, Fla., July 9, 2023 (Newswire.com) - Local non-profit Share the Stage, Inc. has partnered with The Players Centre to provide a free acting camp for young artists with developmental differences July 17-21. Share the Stage, Inc. was founded by 15-year-old Lakewood Ranch actor Mason Chase, who has been on stage since he can remember.
Thayer Greenberg, who was recently named Director of Education for the Players Centre in Sarasota, has served as Chase's director and mentor for the last several years. So when Chase brought his idea and business plan to Greenberg she was excited to help bring it to life. Greenberg has an extensive background in theater education and is committed to creating safe and supportive learning environments where young artists can explore their creativity and develop their skills. Greenberg recognizes that there are not enough programs in Sarasota to allow everyone a meaningful opportunity to participate in the arts. And she's looking to change that "This is just the starting point; the goal is to build the partnership to offer more extensive opportunities, including full productions for students with exceptional abilities."
The team has engaged Melissa Wawrzyniak, who in addition to being a local pediatric occupational therapist has a background in theatre. "I have always dreamed of combining my theater experience with my OT skills and am excited to share my perspective to help all children participate in the joy of theater," says Wawrzyniak. Wawrzyniak has helped build curriculum for the camp and will be on-site to assure all campers have the tools they need to have an amazing time.
Chase explains his love of theatre, but more importantly the community it fosters, stating "There's no other way to describe theater than as something truly magical that fulfills the most basic sense of belonging, friendship, and love."
To help build a community at camp, each artist will be paired with a teen mentor with experience in the performing arts.
