The Future of Fashion: Tony Ward Speaks Out

Tony Ward @tonywardcouture is a Lebanese-Italian fashion designer. He is known as “The Architect of Detail” because of his meticulous approach to fashion design, which combines architectural precision and artistic innovation. He is well-known for his exquisite detailing, geometric designs, and creative use of luxurious textiles that resemble architectural elements. His creations frequently feature exquisite elements like lacework, beading, and embroidery that create a robust yet delicate appearance.

Tony was born in Beirut, Lebanon, into a family with a long fashion history. Tony’s father, famous couturier Elie Ward, raised him in a couture-filled environment, instilling in him a feeling of exceptional craftsmanship.
Before pursuing fashion, Tony studied architecture. His approach to garment construction reflects this. Later, inspired by this legacy, he followed his long-held dream of moving to Paris to study at the prestigious Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.
His ability to mix structure and elegance to create forms that are both sculptural and wearable establishes his reputation as a designer who brings architecture into the level of haute couture.

Before launching his own label, Tony polished his skills by working with truly iconic designers like Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé and Gianfranco Ferré at Dior. Today, his designs are celebrated for their intricate details, innovative structures, and modern interpretations of classic couture. From Hollywood stars to royalty, Tony’s creations are seen on red carpets and stages worldwide. His Spring/Summer 2023 Couture Collection, influenced by his father’s remarkable 70-year journey, reflects his dedication to blending timeless tradition with fresh innovation.

From Concept to Creation

People often call your designs architectural masterpieces. How do you mix creativity with practicality when making wearable art?

Designing wearable art is about the striking balance between creativity and functionality. Architecture is a major influence on my work; I always base my designs on structures, details, and bold geometry. But then practicality comes from understanding my clients, listening to their needs… I focus on creating pieces that are both visually attractive and bold, yet again comfortable.

Legacy of Elegance

As someone who grew up in a family atelier, what’s the most unforgettable lesson your father, Elie Ward, taught you about couture?

My father, Elie Ward, taught me that true couture lies in the details and its savoir-faire. He always said that a piece is only as strong as its foundation, whether it’s the seams, the cut, or the stitching; He taught me to look into these stitches for the bigger picture.

We actually still use his techniques and savoir-faire 75 years later in the atelier, and this is why I ensure every piece, from sketch to runway, is a reflection of that legacy.

The Challenge of Celebrity Collaboration

Your creations are worn by royalty, celebrities, and icons and often seen on red carpets. What is it like to work with celebrities, and how does their persona influence your designs? Can you share a recent collaboration with a celebrity that stood out to you?

Working with celebrities is always exciting because it brings a new dimension to the design process, seeing my pieces shining on major red carpets or worn by iconic women from all over the world is, and will always be, my drive to design. Their persona often inspires me to tailor pieces that reflect their individuality while staying true to my brand’s essence. One recent collaboration that stood out was with Sharon Stone, who also has become a friend of the brand, who wore a gown from our Nymphs Rebirth collection. Her charisma and confidence elevated the piece, creating a synergy that made it unforgettable. Celebrities bring their own stories to the designs, and that collaboration is part of what makes Couture so special, all while keeping my fashion house’s DNA.

From Apprentice to Master Designer

Looking back at your training under iconic designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Gianfranco Ferré, what is the most profound lesson you’ve carried into your own brand?

Training under Karl Lagerfeld and Gianfranco Ferré was a definitely a milestone and the core of where I am today. The most profound lesson I learned was to balance both innovation and tradition. Karl taught me to never shy away from pushing boundaries, while Ferré deepened my appreciation for architectural precision in design.

Biggest Risk

Every designer has moments when they take a creative risk. What was the boldest decision you’ve made in your career, and how did it shape your brand?

I don’t believe in a specific moment where I took a bold risk as I believe we are doing so every day by pushing limits and creating pieces ‘out of lines.

However, the fact that Tony Ward Fashion House’ atelier and headquarter is in Lebanon, and with all the challenges we had faced during the last few years, I believe we took the risk by standing tall and keep walking no matter what… A risk I will forever cherish!

The Future of Haute Couture

Do you believe haute couture, as we know it, will maintain its essence, or will it morph into something entirely different in response to cultural and technological changes? Could it become more accessible?

Haute couture will always retain its essence, its commitment to craftsmanship and exclusivity. However, it is also evolving. Innovative techniques, integrating 3D printing and sustainable materials, are influencing the way we approach design. While couture may not become entirely accessible, I believe it can embrace inclusivity through collaborations and techniques without losing its authenticity. We are entering the era of ‘Silent Luxury’ I would say.

The Future of Fashion Weeks

Without giving too much away, can you share what fans can expect from your upcoming show at Couture Week in Paris? Do you think fashion weeks will remain as influential in the digital age?

Our upcoming show at Couture Week in Paris will focus on celebrating nature’s harmony through a modern lens. Without giving too much away, expect intricate details and themes that work around uncontrollable forces. As for fashion weeks, I believe their role will remain significant, but they’ll continue to evolve with digital advancements. Livestreams, virtual experiences, and greater accessibility are reshaping how audiences engage with these events.
