Multi-platinum selling iconic group GRAND FUNK RAILROAD announced today additional tour dates to their highly anticipated upcoming ‘The American Band Tour,’ in honor of the 50th anniversary of their 1973 “We’re An American Band” platinum-selling single and album. New dates include performances in New York, Ohio, Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Utah, Nevada, Indiana, South Carolina, Missouri, Alabama, Louisiana, California, South Dakota, New Jersey, Michigan, and Mississippi.

One of rock’s most definitive anthems, founding member Don Brewer (vocals and drums) was the soul writer and vocalist on “We’re An American Band,” which went all the way to #1 on the Billboard ‘Hot 100’ chart on Sept. 29, 1973.

“‘We’re An American Band’ came to me when we were flying from town-to-town on our ‘Phoenix Tour’ in 1972,” said Brewer of writing the song. “We were being sued by our former manager, Terry Knight, and he was trying to stop us from performing. The line, ‘We’re comin’ to your town, we’ll help you party it down,’ came to me first, and I wrote the song around that line, taking snippets of things going on during the tour at that time – like staying up all night with Freddy King playing poker, four young chiquitas in Omaha, sweet, sweet Connie in Little Rock, and, finally, the declaration, ‘We’re An American Band,’ because it sounds great and sings well.”

As part of this year’s itinerary, the legendary rock & roll powerhouse will be the “special guests” of Kid Rock for two hometown shows in Michigan at Little Caesars Arena on Friday, July 14, and Saturday, July 15. See GRAND FUNK RAILROAD’s full tour itinerary below.

ABOUT GRAND FUNK RAILROAD:

Known as “The American Band,” the high-energy five-piece group includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, “We’re an American Band”) and bassist Mel Schacher, “The God of Thunder.” Joining Don and Mel are true “All Stars.” Singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 Special. Max penned and sang 38’s biggest hit “Second Chance” and was co-founder of California’s legendary Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Don refers to Max as “the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet.” Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and has credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier. (KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by Grand Funk.) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master’s degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called “Dr. Tim”, his credits include stints with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and English soul man Robert Palmer.

The National Memorial Day Parade Returns to Washington, DC, Led by Legends of Space

The National Memorial Day Parade Returns to Washington, DC, Led by Legends of SpaceLast living ‘moonwalkers’ to Grand Marshal the parade as NASA prepares for America’s return to the moon after more than 50 years

Today, in commemoration of Military Appreciation Month, the American Veterans Center (AVC) announces the return of the National Memorial Day Parade Presented by Boeing, on Constitution Avenue alongside the iconic monuments of the National Mall, starting at 2 pm on Monday, May 29th, 2023.

Grand Marshals of the 2023 National Memorial Day Parade will be ‘The Legends of Apollo‘ – heroes from NASA’s famed Apollo program and the first men to walk on the moon – coming as NASA prepares the next generation of moonwalkers through the forthcoming Artemis program. The parade, presented by Boeing, is the largest Memorial Day event in the nation and serves as a moving timeline of American history, featuring historical re-enactors, military veterans, active duty personnel, celebrities, and entertainers to honor and salute the men and women who have sacrificed in service to America.

“AVC is proud to announce the return of this holiday tradition and honored to welcome these legends of history as our Grand Marshals,” said AVC President Tim Holbert“They symbolize America’s shared values of service and sacrifice and their achievements inspire hope for Americans’ potential as we look to the future.”

Joining as Grand Marshals will be Russell ‘Rusty’ Schweickart (lunar module pilot on Apollo 9) Charlie Duke (lunar module pilot on Apollo 16), and Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmidt (lunar module pilot on Apollo 17) – Duke and Schmidt being two of the four living men to walk on the moon, with Schmidt being the last living person to have set foot on its surface.

The National Memorial Day Parade will be joined by honored veterans from World War II to the present day as a tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

“All of us at The Boeing Company want to thank the American Veteran’s Center for your ongoing commitment to our veterans and for making this parade possible,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes“It’s an honor to support this powerful tribute to our fallen service members.”

In addition to the live, in-person experience, the parade’s television special will be broadcast on national television through major network affiliates (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, CW) and worldwide to every military installation and Navy ship at sea on American Forces Network, to reach a collective audience of more than 100 million households. The American Veterans Center re-introduced the tradition of a Memorial Day parade along Constitution Avenue in 2005, decades after it had faded away during the Second World War.

The American Veterans Center (AVC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational foundation dedicated to guarding the legacy and honoring the sacrifice of our military personnel from every generation.

1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare by James Shapiro is tonight, Thursday, April 27, named winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction ‘Winner of Winners’ Award. The winner was announced by Chair of Judges, Jason Cowley, at a ceremony hosted at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction Winner of Winners Award marks the 25th anniversary of the UK’s premier non-fiction book prize by crowning the best work of non-fiction from the last 25 years of the prize. As the winner, Shapiro will receive £25,000.

The winner was chosen by a judging panel comprising of: New Statesman editor-in-chief, Jason Cowley (chair); academic, critic and broadcaster, Shahidha Bari; journalist, author and academic, Sarah Churchwell; and biographer and critic Frances Wilson. Their selection was made from a shortlist of six books, taken from the previous 24 prizewinning books.

In the course of 1599, Shakespeare completed Henry V, wrote Julius Caesar and As You Like It in quick succession, and produced the first draft of his greatest play, Hamlet. In his winning book 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, Shapiro shows how The Bard progressed from his tale of two star-crossed lovers to Hamlet. Shapiro finds one question the most pressing: how did Shakespeare become Shakespeare – one of the greatest writers who ever lived?

James Shapiro is Professor of English at Columbia University, where he teaches Shakespeare. His earlier books have received international acclaim, including 1606: The Year of Lear, which won the James Tait Black Prize; 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, which won the Samuel Johnson Prize; and Shakespeare in a Divided America, selected as one of the 10 best books of the year by the New York Times. Shapiro is also the author of Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare?, Oberammergau: The Troubling Story of the World’s Most Famous Passion Play, Shakespeare and the Jews, and Rival Playwrights: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, and edited the Library of America anthology, Shakespeare in America. His reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, and other publications. He has served on the board of directors of The Royal Shakespeare Company, and advises productions for the Public Theatre in New York and other companies. Shapiro was a collaborator on The King and the Playwright, a series he hosted for the BBC and also hosted the BBC The Mysterious Mr. Webster. In 2011, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is currently serving as a Booker Prize judge.

Jason Cowley, Chair of judges, says:
“1599 is a remarkable and compelling book. A history of four masterpieces and of so much more, it produces a life of Shakespeare, about whom so little is known, through an ingenious fusion of history, politics, and literary criticism. The result is a poised and original re-imagination of biography. Shapiro returns Shakespeare to the stage of his own world, and in so doing, he transforms our understanding – not only of the great works but also of the social atmosphere of his times. Erudite, accessible and formally bold, it will appeal to anyone interested in history, politics, literature and good writing.”

Peter Singlehurst, Partner at Baillie Gifford, says:

“The strapline for the Baillie Gifford Prize is ‘all the best stories are true’. But it is not necessarily their factfulness that makes these books so special, it is the stories about people, ordinary and extraordinary. Choosing one book seems an impossible task and we thank the judges for taking on the unenviable responsibility. Many congratulation to James Shapiro.”

Sir Leonard Blavatnik, Head of the Blavatnik Family Foundation, says:

“For twenty-five years, the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction has recognized immensely talented authors. We congratulate James Shapiro on this exceptional achievement. We are proud to be the long-time sponsor of the podcasts showcasing the short-listed books and their authors, as well as the annual celebratory gala in London when the winners are announced.”
