TiEnergy LLC, a family-owned railroad tie recycling and repurposing company that recently celebrated its 20th year in business, announced that its Founder & President Steve Berglund was awarded the “Notable Leader in Sustainability” recognition by Crain’s Chicago Business. TiEnergy partners with Class I, Class II, and Short Line railroads, commercial and industrial companies, and landfills across the United States and Canada to help them meet sustainability goals and reduce their carbon footprints. Berglund has pioneered innovative methods to give a second life to hard-to-recycle railroad ties and industrial wood, placing railroads at the forefront of the circular economy. 

“I’m honored to receive this Notable Leader award from Crain’s Chicago Business, and thrilled that TiEnergy is being recognized for its impact on business sustainability,” says Berglund. “There are 20 million ties that are retired each year, and each repurposed tie saves 3.06 pounds of carbon. If each and every tie was upcycled, we could save 61,200,000 pounds of carbon from being released into the atmosphere annually. Our motto is simple: change the process, change the world—one tie at a time.”  

These 20 million railroad ties that are retired each year have historically created a significant environmental challenge for railroads. Storing old ties in railyards is a fire hazard and utilizes valuable real estate, and woodchipper machines aren’t equipped to process the metal plates on each tie. To solve these challenges, Berglund patented a technology called The Tie Plate Picker – a machine that efficiently removes the metal hardware from each tie so the wood can be ground up. He created a substance called TIEROC, an aggregate substitute made from ground-up ties that reduces the need for heavier, carbon-intensive alternatives. Landfills use TIEROC as a sustainable roadway for trucks, streamlining operations and preventing backlogs. These innovations have created a market for post-consumer waste that didn’t previously exist and opened new paths for industrial sustainability.

BEK TV has begun broadcasting a new series called “Capturing America’s Heartland: CO2 Pipeline.” The reports explore the concerns and benefits of a proposed high-pressure carbon dioxide pipeline that would be built in close proximity to residential North Dakota. New reports will be released every Wednesday and Friday and will re-run at various times throughout the week. All episodes can be viewed live online at bek.news/capturingamericasheartland, or in the archives. 

The CO2 pipeline has been the topic of controversy among residents and rural landowners across the Midwest, and particularly in North Dakota. It would transport carbon dioxide captured from ethanol plants in five Midwest states to an endpoint north and west of the Bismarck-Mandan area, in Oliver and Mercer counties.

“Earlier this year, I attended a meeting where legislators were present, and a young woman boldly walked up to the microphone and started asking questions about the CO2 pipeline,” says Lori Hinz, BEK TV host of “Capturing America’s Heartland: CO2 Pipeline” and “No Apologies.” “That moment sparked something in me. This is an issue with a lot of questions surrounding it, and I felt incredibly compelled to learn more about it and share what I learned.”

“Capturing America’s Heartland: CO2 Pipeline” invites experts on all sides of the issue to weigh in on a variety of concerns and benefits regarding building an unusually large pipeline so close to residents and property owners. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing technical, regulatory, and health and safety challenges, the series explores how the proposed route could affect the Heartland of America.

“My family and I live just miles away from the proposed pipeline route,” says Hinz. “This issue hits close to home for me.”

A Parent Media Co. Inc. (“APMC”), owner of Kidoodle.TV, the Safe Streaming™ service, announced the winners of its “KidoodlED Million Dollar School Giveaway” on June 16th, following a tremendous response from schools across Canada and the U.S. The contest saw more than 328,000 votes come in for schools vying for grants between $10,000 and $20,000 for critical school projects.  

Nominations for the contest opened on April 15th with public schools having an opportunity to flex their creative muscles aiming to win a $10,000 grant, with the top five schools with the highest number of votes winning $20,000. Voting took place between June 1st -15th, and on June 16th the winners were announced with Canadian schools capturing all top five spots.  

Schools from across the continent did not disappoint with highly creative submissions from students and teachers alike. From a parody of an episode of The Office to an endearing adaptation of Barenaked Ladies’ If I Had a Million Dollars, Kidoodle.TV’s heartstrings were tugged at with true creative energy.  

“The power of collaboration and community spirit displayed throughout the contest was remarkable. The spirited response we saw with these submissions was so heartening for our entire team,” said Neil Gruninger, APMC’s co-founder, president, and chief product officer.  

Maple Ridge Elementary School of Orleans, Ontario was one of the $20,000 grant winners. The kindergarten to Grade 8 school highlighted the need to repair the drainage issues in their outdoor play yard and upgrade the children’s connected spaces with more seating and exploring furniture.  

“This was a team effort that blew us away. We had voters from all over the world join us in our efforts to win. It was truly a global affair,” said Megan Nowiski, a kindergarten teacher at the school. She added that they were also very thankful to be supported by another school, Henry Munro Middle School. “They are a school in a very underserved community that voted daily for us. We are proud to have sent a generous sum of our extra winnings to them as a thank you.”  

Nowiski said the school plans to use the grant to repair their outdoor play area for kindergarten students, as well as create a new learning space in their front foyer and an outdoor garden for the entire school community to enjoy. “Thank you to KidoodlED for allowing us all to dream big and then turn those dreams into reality,” said Nowiski.  

For the students of Noel A. Smith Elementary of Frisco, Texas, the impact of winning the $10,000 grant will be profound, says Morgan Hicks, a teacher at the school. In their nomination video, a spoof of The Office, the administration discussed the need for new equipment for their makerspace, art resources and new gym equipment. She said the new resources would help students develop essential skills for the future and prepare them to confidently tackle challenges and embrace opportunities that lie ahead.
